GOLDEN BAY ELECTRIC POWER BOARD MONTHLY MEETING (JFrom Our Own Correspondent) At the monthly meeting of the Golden Bay Electric Power Board held in the Board Room the follow- ' ing members were in attendance: Messrs F. Page (chairman), ,1. E. Windle, F. W. Falconer, H. Manson and A. Taylor, and the EngineerManager, Mr J. P. Cottier. An application was received from Mr F. Hope of Waitui, Upper Takaka, for permission to run a small generator for lighting purposes. The Board decided that the application be granted. The Wiremen’s Registration Board advised that the annual copy of the Registers, as this year purged of dead names, had been published as a supplement to the “N.Z. Gazette.” The Engineer's action in ordering a consignment of ironbark poles was , approved. Advice was received as to the dates of the annual conference of the Secretaries’ Branch of the Electric Power Boards’ Association, which is to be held .in Wellington on 25th and 26th August. The Engineer-Manager was authorised to attend the confer- i ence. A considerable quantity of correspondence was received in regard to the Industrial legislation as it affects . supply authorities. The Engineer j was directed to obtain copies of the Factories Act. The treasurer’s statement for the month of May was received and accounts totalling £163 18s 3d were passed for payment. The Engineer-Manager’s report for the month of May stated:— Headworks and Generating Plant: The month of May was exceptionally dry and difficulty in maintaining full output on peak loads was experienced on various occasions. The generating equipment operated satisfactorily and maintenance was normal. The units generated during May totalled 68,620 with a maximum demand of 195 k.w„ as compared with 72,080 units and 192 k.w. for the same period of last year. Units purchased during the month totalled 4,050. The rainfall for the period totalled 5.9 inches with a maximum fall of 3.99 inches on sth May. During the month a considerable amount of time was directed towards repairing leaks in the race with concrete and effecting improvements to the storage system. The site has been cleared, the bulk of the timber delivered, and a start made with the erection of the caretaker’s cottage at the Power Station. Consumers: —Three new consumers, comprising lighting, heating, two hotwater services, and one heat-storage range, were connected to the supply during the month making a total to date of 400 consumers. Lhies:— I Two services were erected and maintenance carried out where necessary. Income:—Revenue from the sale of electrical energy from all sources for May totalled £371 as against £376 for the same period of last year. I Sales of goods and installations for , the period amounted to £75 making a total to date of £139. BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY j TAKAKA BRANCH There was a very good attendance at the annual meeting of the Takaka branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society held in the Presbyterian Social Hall recently. The Rev. D W. Morgan, who presided over the meeting, introduced to the gathering the Rev. David Calder, M.A., General Secretary for New Zealand. Mr Calder addressed the meeting at length, covering in detail many phases of the Bible Society’s work and stressing

particularly the work in foreign fields. He thanked the local branch for the assistance it had given in the past and stated that he looked forward to a continuance of its wholehearted support in the future. At the close of his address Mr Morgan thanked Mr Calder for his interesting and inspiring address which he felt sure was much appreciated by all present. Mrs C. Page and Mrs McCallum were re-elected president and secretary respectively of the local branch for the ensuing year, while the usual collectors were asked to again give their support. The following day the Revs. D. Calder and D. W. Morgan journeyed on to Rockville and Puponga and in the afternoon attended a meeting of the Bible Society in Collingwood at which Mr Calder again spoke on the Society’s work. The Rev. Mr Kirkham, who presided over the Collingwood meeting, stated that there were definite prospects of a branch being formed there in the near future. MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB The Takaka Miniqture Rifle Club staged a very successful first shoot for the season in Everybody’s Theatre, Takaka. Further shoots are to be held each Wednesday evening during the coming weeks. Details of the scoring are as follows: L. Hitchcock, 75; R. Ewart, 75; Miss McCallum, 71; R. Hambrook, 71; T. C.
