BRITISH FREIGHTER CREATES RECORD
FIRST INTO MONTREAL HARBOUR To a British freighter has fallen the distinction of being the earliest oceangoing ship, in history to enter the port of Montreal after the winter freezeup (writes Reuter’s Canadian News Service). She was the West Wales (4,353 tons) registered at Cardiff, and arrived on 13th April—a lucky number for her skipper, Captain Frederick Nicholls. The previous record was 14th April, established in 1933 by the American steamer Boston City. For his achievement the captain received the traditional gold-headed cane from the harbour authorities. In olden days the skipper of the first ship in also received a top hat—but sailors don’t wear ’em nowadays. The West Wales brought a cargo of linseed from the Argentine. The Port of Montreal had one of its busiest seasons on record last year and it is likely to be surpassed this year. Several new steamship lines are to be inaugurated to the Far East and other places. 1
