PROPOSED ROAD

ACROSS RABBIT ISLAND “A MATTER OF ARITHMETIC” The question of. a proposed road across the Rabbit Island was again before the Harbour Board yesterday afternoon, when the Mapua Fruitgrowers’ Association asked the board to make strenuous efforts to get the road started. A suggestion was made in the letter that the Minister of'Public Works be communicated with asking him to visit Nelson and view the prospect. Mr W. C. Harley sa'id that he would be in favour of the board doing something in the matter, if after examination the scheme proved financially sound; though he would not be a party to any wildcat scheme. It was all a matter of arithmetic, and until the board could get the figures to work the sum with they could get no further. Some portion of ’the figures, namely in connection with Mapua, were available to the board, and other figures could be obtained as estimates, but other portions the board could not get without the cooperation of local bodies, such as the Waimea County Council. It was resolved that the matter be left in the hands of the Wharves and Finance Committee to secure more information and report to the board.
