COMPULSORY UNIONISM
TIMBER WORKERS’ AWARD DRAFTING OF THE CLAUSE (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. Application for a new timber workers’ award for South Auckland, Taranaki and Wellington districts was heard in the Arbitration Court today, as an outcome of an agreement at Conciliation proceedings at Palmerston North on 6th May. Mr Read, for the, North Island Timber Workers’ Federation, brought under the Court’s notice the matter of compulsory unionism. He said he had been in touch with the Minister, who told him that the amended Arbitration Act would be in operation almost immediately. Mr Read informed the Court that he understood that the compulsory unionism clause would come into force in a month after the passing of the Act. He wished that the clause be embodied in the new award.
Mr Seed, representing the employers, said those engaged in the Conciliation proceedings appeared to wish to leave the drafting of the preference clause entirely to the Court, so that the clause would be in compliance with the new legislation, Mr Justice Page said the Court would take time to consider that point when the legislation went through and would draw a clause in accordance with the legislation.
