GROWTH OF CIVIL SERVICE
POSITION IN BRITAIN Twenty-five years ago there were 215,000, civil servants employed in Britain, involving an expenditure of £24,000,000 a year. The'total number of civil servants on Ist April, 1934, was approximately 439,120, writes Mr Edward Leonard, in the “Millgate Monthly.” From these figures it will be seen that the Civil Service staffs have multiplied by more than 100 per cent., while the State expenditure upon them is well ove" £70,000,000 a year. But even these figures do not tell the whole st ol ’.Y the growth of the Civil Service to-dav, because more and more machinery is being introduced into Government offices. AVith these electrically-driven machines old methods of accounting and recording are being scrapped, and fewer appointments made to clerical and administrative grades. In the customs and other big offices the tabulating machines have displaced human labour.
