ON IRE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS Black Duke was reported as likely to be retired after racing at Wingatui iast month, but he was on the scene of action again at Washdykc on Saturday, and but for the tactics adopted in rushing him to the lead a Jong way from home lie might have given Streamline more trouble. The veteran can be depended upon to add to his record during the Easter racing. He is booked to contest the brush hurdle events at Riecartou. Streamline has every credential to develop into one of the Dominion’s best hurdlers. He has always shown an aptitude as a jumper, and although without experience, lie found no trouble in mastering the fences at VVashdyke on Saturday, notwithstanding that a fast pace was on throughout. By Day Comet, he is a half-brother to two good gallopers in Waterline and East Passage, and as he is only four years of age, and lias had a patient policy adopted with him, his future hears a bright outlook. C'oll gave promise at one stage of Saturday s hurdle race at Timaru of taking part in the finish, but lie faded out when the business stages were reached. He is now raced by Ins ownertrainer, G. Murfitl, to whom lie' was presented by Mr P. Galligan, who had no luck with him after lie acquird him from tlie West Coast. Pink Polly, winner of the maiden event at Washdyke on Saturday, is a half-sister by Pink Coat to Niglitform, who by Night Raid showed a tendency as a stayer. She is endowed with a rare turn of speed, and appears to be smart in finding her feet, so that she should be a useful stake-earner with a little more age. She is tAlined by S. Barr, who supplied tlie uinner of a similar event at Oanuuu in Silver Slipper, also by Pink Coat. Burr also trams Passenger, who ran third to Pink Polly. Passenger is a three-year-old by Roydon from First Class, and is owned by his breeder, Mr J. R. McKenzie.

Jockeys have to provide their own lead for making up their weight, and in consequence the smaller one is the more lead it is necessary to carry if tlie boy happens to be a good rider. A correspondent suggests that the clubs should get a supply of lead and keep it in the weighing room, and then the jockeys could use it and return it. Carrying tlie saddle, lead, clothing, etc., makes it pretty hard work for some jockeys attending meetings. Last year's Grand National and Great Northern Steeples winner Valpeen appears to have fully recovered from his attack of strangles, but has not yet been given any work which will thoroughly test his glands. He is picking up condition, and is doing work on bis owners private track at Okoroire. Valpeen is entered for the Autumn Steeplechase at Ellerslie at Easter. It is likely that the disappointing Lord Quex three-year-old Haul Monde will be tried over a distance in -the future. In his recent races in sprint events Haut Monde has been lacking in early brilliancy, but lias been finishing oil in great style. A very fit horse at present, Haut Monde will be one of F. Davis’ team for Auckland at Easter, where lie lias an engagement in the St. Leger.

Trouvaille was having bis first race for some time when he finished in tlie money on tlie first day of tlie Tauranga meeting. That outing should effect improvement in his condition and he can be looked to for better things when next produced. He appears among the entries for the autumn meeting at Ellerslie and lie should not fail lo give a good account of himself (says a Waikato writer). He was looking a picture of condition when produced at Tauranga. The. Chief Ruler two-year-old Mcrial, who won on both days at the recent Waikato meeting, will have her next start in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes on tlie first day of tlie Auckland autumn meeting. She lias not done a great deal of racing; in fact, her first essay in public was at tlie Matamata meeting in February, where she rail second lo Gay Streak in heavy going. Siie followed up that promising effort by winning in her next two starts, since when she has been taking matters easily at Te Rapa. Sirona won attractively over a mile in high-weight company on tlie second day of tlie iast Waikato meeting (says a Waikato writer). The opposition certainly was nothing above the ordinary, and if started in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie she will be pitted againstmuch sterner opposition. However, it must be remembered that she is capable of improving further on that effort, and as she should come in lightly for the big Ellerslie mile she must be conceded an outside chance, especially if the going is on the holding side. K. Voitre has been offered tlie mount on the favourite for tlie Sydney Cup, Contact, but lias not yet decided to accept it. He lias several other good mounts under offer for the race, but may delay any decision until ho knows whether Garrio, whom he will ride in the Doncaster Handicap, will start in the Cup. This may not be known definitely until after tlie Doncaster. Voitre’s remarkable run of success in important races tins season seems likely to continue at the autumn carnival in bydney. Besides having the oiler of the mount on lh<? favourite for the Cup, he has already been engaged for Garrio, in tlie Doncaster, for which race tlie colt is favourite Voitre rode Hall Mark to victory in tlie Doncaster Handicap iast year. The majority of racegoers .had long ago given up Diatomous, for apart from a minor win early in the season he had not won in 15 months. While his success at Awapnni last week was a trifle lucky, he did show something like a return to form, and a feature was that lie ran on much more solidly than usual. He should win again if he repeats form. A pleasant feature of the win was that his trainer, A. E. Neale, profited by the unexpected victory. Valicare, who is now at Elderslie with a Jilly foal at foot by the imported horse) John Buchan, was represented by a winner in Sydney last Saturday, her daughter, Siren, by the I‘lialaris horse, Salmagundi, winning at her first appearance on a racecourse. Valicare, who won upwards of £13,000 in stakes when racing for her owner, Mr P. Osborn, a member of tlie A.J.C. committee, will probably be mated with the recently imported Blandlord horse, Soli-citor-General, now at Elderslie. This very attractive horse will be. given a good chance in his first stud season with mares of the calibre of Valicare, Queen March. Oymene, Refinement (the dam of tlie West Australian Derby winner, Yaringa), and other high-class producers.
