OBITUARY
FREDERIC MARIE BOUILLET, O.A. (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. _ The death of M. Frederic Marie Bouillet, 0.A., occurred at the residence of his daughter, Madame J. de Filippi, 10 Epuni street, Lower Hutt, "yesterday. Born at Macon, France, on 31st December, 1853, the late M. Bouillet was for 31 years chief accountant, assistant manager, and directing manager of the Paris branch of the Nubian Manufacturing Co., Ltd., London. He retired in 1914.
The late M. Bouillet was a veteran of the 1870 Franco-Prussian War. He volunteered when only 10 years of age, and was made a prisoner at Longny after a desperate hand-to-hand fight, where he was wounded by an enemy bayonet. He was sent to Stralsund and Erfurt, and remained for six months in capivity. M. Bouillet came on a visit to New Zealand with his w'ife in 1920, leaving again for Europe in 1923. He returned to New Zealand in 1928 after the death of his wife, and remained with his daughter at Lower Hutt. He was the delegate to the Ligue Maritime et Coloniale Francaise in New Zealand He represented the French Government and acteTl as consular agent on various occasions during the absence of Mr O. R. Bendall.
He was a vice-president of the Cercle Litteraire Francais of Wellington. His sharp wit and keen sense of humour and literary abilities were greatly appreciated and his kindly nature and outstanding personality gained him many friends. He was a voracious reader and a fine poet, and wrote about 200 pieces of verse. M. Bouillet was lionouerd by the French Government in 1930, and nominated Officier d’Academie. He is survived by his only child, Madame de Filippi.
COLONEL J. MacNAUGHTAN CHRISTIE (United Preßß Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received Ist April, 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, 31st March. The death occurred suddenly to-day of Colonel Joseph MacNaughtan Christie. Colonel J. MacNaughtan Christie, C.8.E., was born at Glasgow in 1871 and educated at Glasgow, Dublin and Berlin. He later came to New Zealand, where he secured a position as surgeon on the staff of the New Plymouth Hospital. Subsequently he was surgeon and later consulting surgeon at the Wanganui Hospital, surgical specialist on the hospital ship Maheno in 1910-17, consulting surgeon to the forces in New Zealand, 1917-20, and president of the War Pensions Medical Appeal Board for New Zealand, 1921-23. He was New Zealand representative on the League of Red Cross Societies. He married Miss Vita Alice Mary Bay Icy, elder daughter of Mr Reginald Bayley, New Plymouth. MRS F. A. SCAMMELL The late Mrs Florence Annie Scammell, relict of W. H. Scammell, was born in London and lived for a number of years in South Africa, where her husband was mining. In 1920 she returned to England and later migrated to New Zealand. For the last 9 years she has been living quietly in Nelson, where she was much esteemed by all who knew her for her cheerful and sympathetic disposition. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs McGregor, of Wellington and Sister Scammell, formerly of Wairoa Hospital.
