COUNCIL OF GOVERNORS THE MONTHLY MEETING PRINCIPALS' REPORTS At the monthly meeting of the Council of Governors of the Nelson Colleges last evening, there were present: Mr C. U. Fell (chairman), Mrs Clnlds, Messrs u. Milner, W. Lock, F. Cullen, S. Kenning, Dr. H. E. A, Washbourn and Dr. N. in S, Johnston. , The Education Board notified the reappointment of Mr F. V. Knapp as thenrepresentative on the Council of GoveiMr W Lock, who retires by effluxion of time,'is to be recommended to the Government for re-appointment-, the, chairman paying tribute to his services. , . The Education Department asked lor information in relation to proposals at present before the Board for improve- 1 meats to the school grounds. It was re-, solved to sup pi v the particulars of the proposed improvements at both Colleges. j TECHNICAL REPORT j The Technical Supervisor (Air T. j Milne) reported that the improvement, shown last month in attendances had . been well maintained. “New classes, have been formed in English and arith-, metic and in the art. needlework, and classes in radio engineering, of_ which there will be two uer week. The art classes have improved a little, and indications are that they will further improve. “Miss Bislov has asked that the classes in outdoor sketching be again established. The manual training classes are now working smoothly.” It was resolved that the classes in outdoor sketching be recommenced provided sufficient students are offering.

PRINCIPAL OF GIRLS’ COLLEGE The Principal of the Gills’ College, Miss J. Stewart, reported that the roll j numbers on 2nd March were 388 in the ■ upper school and 42 in the preparatory, ; 57 being boarders. j “National Council of Educational Research : The College was asked by the; Director of this Council to arrange to j give two intellegenee tests under special conditions, on 24th and 25th inst.. synchronising with others given in 700 schools throughout New Zealand. “Examination successes: It is interesting to note that two recent Old Girls have distinguished themselves —Aliss Marv Griffin, by sharing with another candidate the senior scholarship in Greek, and Aliss Frances Leggatt, by winning an exhibition to Oxford after eighteen months at Cheltenham Ladies’ College. “Early in the month the College received a visit from Aliss Mildred Garland, the new organising secretary for tile Barnardo Helpers’ League in New Zealand, who has recently been sent out from England. She commended the Col-

lege ffir its consistent interest shown to the League in the past. The College felt that an honour had been conferred by the appointment of an old girl, Aliss Yolande Marsh, as her travelling secretary for the North Island. “On Friday of last week Dr. Salmond, Professor of Religious Knowledge at Knox College, Dunedin, addressed those interested, on Palestine. “During the month all but the junior boarders were taken to the Boys’ College to attend a most interesting lantern lecture given bv Mr Nesbitt, Australian Trade Commissioner. “The Dramatic Club is most grateful to Aliss Stuart (of Collingwood street), for gifts of several ‘period’ frocks.’ “The Rev. D. Ilaultain has presented to the College library several prize books awarded to the late Mrs Haultain.” NELSON COLLEGE Tlie report of the Principal of Nelson College (Air H. V. Searle) slated inter alia : “We have to thank Dr. Johnston for presenting a book to the Scriptorium,

[ and Mr Gilbert of Stoke for arranging a ’ demonstration at bis orchard for the agricultnra'l boys. 1 “During the. month addresses were ’ given to the school bv Dr. Laird, organiser for the Crusader Union movement, and Dr. Salmond, Professor of Religious Education at Knox College and Director of the Presbyterian Youth 1 Movement. The Australian Trade Commissioner, Mr Nesbitt, also spent an evening showing films of Australian cities, industries and animal life.”
