PERSONAL ITEMS

'Mr and Mrs Limerick, of Seddon, are at present guests at the Masonic Hotel. Mrs E. S. Relling, of Palmerston North, is at present staying in Nelson. Mr J. N. Chester, of Pittsburgh, has been in Nelson for the past few days. He left for Wellington by ’plane to-day.

Air T. Washbourne and Mrs Washbourne, of Christchurch; are visitors to Nelson. They are guests at the Masonic Hotel.

Among the guests at the Commercial Hotel are Air A. AlcKay, of Christchurch ; and Air T. T. Gough, of Christchurch.

Mr A. Wing, assistant to the chief auditor of the Bank of New Zealand, is presently retiring after over forty years of service with the bank, which he joined at Kaiapoi in 1893. Mr J. R. Kerr, and Airs Kerr, of Nelson, will leave on a holiday visit to Australia. They will he away for about five weeks and intend to visit Sydney and Melbourne.

Among the ‘guests at the Alasonic Hotel are Air R. Dawson and Mr A. Capp, of Dunedin. AI. R. H. Post, of Wellington and Air D. V. White, of Christchurch.

In the University of New Zealand senior scholarships that for Greek was won by Aliss Alary B. Griffin of Canterbury University College and K. C. E. AlcKenzie (Auckland University College) the emolument to be divided.

Air F, L. Kem-ick, who has been a sub-inspector of branches of the Bank of New Zealand for the past four years is retiring. Mr Kenrick joined the Bank of New Zealand at the Thames branch in 1893.

Air J. B. Williams, a son of Air T. H. Williams, of the legal firm of Williams and White, Cashel street, has received word that lie has passed the final examination for the LL.B. _ degree. Air Williams is an old boy of Nelson College.

Air Russell Girling, a son of Air and Airs W. J. Girling, of Blenheim, has received notice of his transfer from the Public Trust Office at Thames to the Christchurch office. Air Girling was transferred from Blenheim to the Thames office a year ago.

Air D. S. A. Weir, Inspector of Stock for the Blenheim district, has received notification "confirming his appointment as Stock Adviser on Animal Health to the Falkland Islands Administration. Air Weir, with his wife and family, will probably be leaving New Zealand to take up his new duties about the end of July.

Professor D. B. Copland, Professor of Commerce and Dean of the Faculty of Commerce in the University of Melbourne, and formerly Professor of Economics at- Canterbury University College, was appointed by the executive committee of the University Senate at its meeting last week to represent the University of New Zealand at the tercentenary celebrations of Harvard University next September. The Rev. Father J. A. Higgins, S.M., who has been on a tour abroad, is returning to Wellington by the Monowai. which is due to arrive to-day. For three years Father Higgins has been lecturer in Christian Social Principles to the Catholics of Wellington. In August of last year he left for Washington, U.S.A., for further study at the Catholic University in that city. After travelling in America, he went on to England. A cablegram lias been received by ihe secretary of the China Inland Mission that Mr J. H. Edgar, of the China Inland Mission, formerly of Tapanui, has died at _Tatsienlu, West China, on the borders of Tibet. Mr Edgar made a name for himself as an explorer in the East. In several of the books on Tibet, the authors acknowledged bis help _in leading them in unknown territories. He was a Fellow of three societies, the Royal Anthropological Society, the Royal Geographical Society, and the Asiatic Society. Recently. Mr Edgar was asked by the National Bible Society of Scotland to the work of distributing the Scriptures in new territory to fulfil the desire of a liberal donor. Mr Edgar leaves behind him a memorial in the Far East, of China in a mountain named after him, Mount Edgar (22,000 ft), which he discovered,
