WHEAT AND SEEDS

CHRISTCHURCH PRICES (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, 27th March. A little more fowl wheat has been offered in Christchurch this week, but the price, though it has come down slightly, is still 4s 7£d a bushel for good whole grade. Undergrade is selling as high as 4s 6d for best samples. Cocksfoot is a little weaker. Offerings were heavier till the middle of the week when they began to ease off. The supply has been more than merchants could readily absorb. Samples have been most varied and contain a good deal of light and discoloured seed. The price is now 7cl to B£d a lb for best. There is no business at all in ryegrass at present, and prices have not altered. Red clover is being offered fairly freely from Marlborough. The quality is not impressive, and prices are low, the present quotation being 6d per lb for farmers’ dressed seed on trucks. No white clover is offering, and it is thought in the trade that the bulk of the local crop has been spoiled by rain and floods. There is a fair carry-over from last season, enough to satisfy the New Zealand demand.

Browntop is stronger, the quotation having risen to Is 3d for machine-dressed seed. The weather has interfered with harvesting, and the crop is not expected to be as large as usual. Fescue has also improved a little, farmers having refused to accept the low prices offering previously. Potatoes remain at £5 15s a ton f.0.b., but there appears to bo little business at this price except for odd transactions between merchants.
