WAR PENSIONS
VISIT OF BRITISH OFFICIAL POSITION OF SOUTH AFRICAN VETERANS (B.v Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. Mr F. N. Smitfi, an official of the British Pensions Department, is at present visiting New Zealand in connection with pensions. He cannot deal with South African pensions, his mission being confined to tlie Great War. He was interviewed yesterday by the Dominion President of the South African War Veterans Association and the President of the V ellington Association, to whom he explained that South African war pensions are under the jurisdiction of the \\ ar Department.
The Dominion President, Mr Goldsmith, afterwards said to a reporter that there are 3,500 men i n New Zealand other than New Zealanders who had seixed m South Africa. He also stated that Dr. A. R. falconer, of Dunedin, a prominent member of the South African \\ ar \ etoraus’ Association was leaving tor England to-dav and would inquire into the. position there. Mr Goldsmith cxpiessed the opinion that it- was tune some Empire scheme should he evolved.
