RADIO BROADCASTING

GOVERNMENT ACTION POSITION OF B STATIONS (By Telegraph) (From “The Mail’s” Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, This Day. The chairmanship of the Broadcasting Board and the relicensing of B stations are two questions that will be dealt with bv the Government during the coming week. This statement was made yesterday by the PostmasterGeneral, the Hon. F. Jones. The Minister said that the term of office of the present chairman of the hoard, Mr 11. D. Vickery, had been extended for three months from the end of last year, and as the term would expire within the next few days it would be necessary to consider the filling of the position. Mr Jones declined to indicate what specific attitude would be adopted toward the B stations. “We promised sympathetic consideration to these' stations during the election campaign,’ he said, “and we are going to carry out that promise. Whether assistance to them will take the form of a subsidy, permission to broadcast sponsored programmes, or the right to raise funds by advertising over the air I cannot say.” The Minister also said that since the Government’s accession to office it had received requests for the licensing of new B stations and for Increases in the hours and power of the existing ones, but so far no decision had been reached on those matters.
