“SHOCKING STATE OF AFFAIRS”
FAILURE TO PAY WAGES IN FULL Defending counsel, Dir J. R. Kerr, termed his client "a muddling fool" in the Dlagistrate’s Court to-day. The case was one in which the Inspector of Factories, Dir J. Dlclvor, brought three charges against DlcKinley Edward Jessop. as follows : On 25th December at Wakefield, being the occupier of a factory, did fail to pay wages in full to David Allan Syder. On 25th December at Wakefield did fail to pay wages in full to Robert Black. Being the occupier of a factory at Wakefield did fail to keep in the prescribed form a wages and overtime book. Mr Dlclvor said that the sum of approximately £ls was owing to each of the boys who over a period had received only £4. Defendant was a most- irresponsible type of employer, and wages for the boys appeared to be his last consideration. The employees were not covered by insurance, his business methods were muddling, and in fact it would be far better if he would realise on his assets and get the idea that ho was an employer right out of his mind. Dir Kerr said he could not disagree with most that Dir Dlclvor had said. Defendant was a “muddling fool.” He had borrowed machinery to start with, his business was a failure, and he had no money. The Dlagistrate, Dir T. E. Dlaunsell. commented that it was a shocking state of affairs, and it was very hal'd on the two young boys'to be deprived of their money. bines of £3 on each of the first two charges were imposed, and £2 on the third. Costs were fixed at 10s in each case.
