PROVINCIAL SCOTTISH SOCIETY

OPENING OF SOCIAL SEASON There was a large attendance at the Oddfellows’ Hall on Monday evening when the first Jngleside of the year took place. There was a splendidly varied programme, many of Nelson's artist.s contributing items of song, dancing and elocution. Excellent dance music was provided by the Troubadors’ Band, and paper hats and novelty dances combined to make the occasion a real gala one. The chief, Mr Walter Black, made a short but very cordial speech of welcome to the large assembly and hoped that every one present would enjoy a very happy evening. The programme was as follows: — Miss D. Shields, song, “My Ain Folk,” (encore, “The Perfect Day”); Miss N. Taylor, violin solo, “Londonderry Air,” (encore, “The Flowers of the Forest”); Miss Pauline McKenzie, tap chume, (encore, skipping rope dance); Miss Netta Cliing, character sketches; Mr Ken McKenzie, song, “My Bonny Leczic Lindsay,” (encore. “Wedding of Lachie McGraw”); .Mrs E. Smith, concertina selections, “Tangled Roses,” (encore. “The Bells”! : M’ 1 F. Huggins, song, “The Sailors’ Paradise,” (encore, “O Flower of all the World”); Miss Stella Swiggs, dance, Highland Fling, (encore. Sword Dance); Miss Grace Inkster, dance. Senna Truibhas, (encore, Sailors’ Hornpipe). Mrs Nan Dowling accompanied the artists. The items were interspersed with dancing till 10.30 p.m. when a dainty supper was served by the committee.

After supper Mr W. McConchie, chairman of the programme committee thanked the artists who had assisted i n making the evening such a great success, and proposed a hearty vote of thanks, which was carried with applause. Dancing continued till 12.30 a.m. Chieftain N. Henderson conducted the ceremonies in a capable manner.
