FRUIT EMBARGO
GOVERNMENT’S ACTIONS WATCHED BY GROWERS
(By Telegraph—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, 20th March. The Canterbury Fruit Growers’ Association decided at its meeting last evening to write urging the New Zealand Fruit Growers’ Federation to keep in touch with the Government when the present embargo on Australian fruits is being given consideration, and to watch the growers’ interests. Mr B. T. Turner said that when the dairy producers bad asked whether the Government would consult them on the fixing of prices, the Minister for Agriculture (the Hon. W. Lee Martin) had said that the time had passed for such discussion, as the matter had been fully explained before the elections. But the only Minister that had explained it then was the Minister for Finance (the Hon. Walter Nash) and he had not said much about it. It was to be hoped that the Government would not adopt a similar attitude when considering the embargo. The chairman, Air F. W. Sisson, said that he liked tlie tone of tlie report of the Government’s intentions to investigate the fruit trade. It was not likely that the Government would do anything without consulting the Director of Horticulture, Mr J. A. Campbell.
