GOLF CLUB

SEASON OPENS 28th MARCH At the annual meeting of the Murchison Golf Club there was a gratifying attendance of members which demonstrated in no uncertain manner the further advancement of the club during the 1930 season. Mr R. L McGregor presided. Before proceeding with ordinary business the chairman made feeling reference to the loss the club had sustained by tlie death of the late Mr E. A. Wall. Although not a playing member, Mr Wall -was keenly interested in the club’s welfare and was one of its most enthusiastic supporters.. Furthermore, he had demonstrated his interest by donating to the dub the Mammoth Cup for the ladies’ championship. A motion of sympathy was carried m the usual respectful manner. The chairman submitted the report and the balance sheet was then read and duly adopted on the motion of the chairman and Mr horensen. Tlie report stated:-The past season has no doubt been the most satisfac-

tory since tiie inception of the club We were very, fortunate with tiro weather at the week-ends and the enthusiasm displayed by tiie committee anil all members was most gratifying. The active membership increased trom 36 to 48, the ladies’ members showing an increase of nearly 100 polecat.

The new greens at Nos. 4,5, and 8 were opened and improvements were made to several of the approaches. Since closing day all the greens have been top dressed and nine enthusiastic members have each been looking after a green. This season the greens should be in better order than they have ever been, but unfortunately the fairways could not be burnt and this will he somewhat of a handicap. Home and home inter-club matches were played with the Stoke Club and these games are proving very popular. All the club matches drew large entries and were keenly contested. Winners of the principal events were: Stewart Championship Cup, A. D. Sorensen; runner-up, R. L McGregor. Sykes Cup, J. B. Milligan; runner-up. F. F. Harris. Dewar Cup, D. N. Mowatt; runner-up, J. T. Baigent. Mammoth Cup (Ladies’ Championship), Mrs M. Sugar; runner-up. Miss Man-

Tliis being the first season we were affiliated we had a visit from the New Zealand Golf Associations’ professional, Mr ,T. A. Clements. His visit extended over a week and practically all our members took the opportunity of receiving tuition. In the jiast the policy of the club has been to increase the revenue by running dances, etc., and so reduce the working bees to a minimum. During the season some enthusiastic members were again called on for work on the links and wo hope the time is not far distant when income from subscriptions will be sufficient to allow labour to he engaged for all hard manual work. During tiie season organised competitions for the ladies were held during the middle of the week. All transport, competitions etc., were attended to by a sub-committee of ladies. These midweek games proved exceptionally popular and no doubt were responsible for the marked increase in tiie ladies 1 membership. The prospects for the approaching season are very satisfactory as we hope to increase our membership anil improve the playing conditions. New members as follows were proposed and accepted: Mr and Mrs S. G. Lyon, Mr and Mrs Moir, Mr A. Wells, Mrs R. Tliurlow, Mr J. F. Wade, Mr N. R. Monson, Mr J. Armstrong, Mrs L. Challics, Mr K. G.
