OBITUARY

MRS CHARLES BEAUMONT

The death of Mrs Charles Beaumont will be a grief to her many Nelson friends who remember her as -Miss Eva Shone, daughter of the late Mr Thomas Shone of .this City. Miss Shone was a pupil of the ToiToi Valley school where she gained a much-coveted Education Board scholarship. From there she passed to Nelson Girls’ College, and at the age of 16 was added to the staff of Nelson Girl’s School. While on this staff Miss Shone taught at Hampden street and later at Haven road. At the end of 1916 she resigned to take charge at Glenhope where she taught until the end of 1918. Later she resumed teaching under the Auckland Education Board, managing very successfully two half-time schools in tlie King Country. ‘ By this rather unusual arrangement the teacher attended each school for three days a week. Miss .Slione’s last position as a teacher was in the Gisborne district. A naturally cheerful but sympathetic nature combined with spontaneous generosity and intense love of children. always endeared her to young folk.- In addition she was always eager to try new methods to simplify or to brighten her pupils’ tastes and to introduce any reforms for their welfare. As early as 1917 Miss Shone bad an organised system of distributing cocoa to her pupils. Being an entertainer of some skill herself, she was always ready to assist patriotic movements or school funds by organising concerts which she produced with considerable skill. In 1920 Miss Shone married Mr Charles Beaumont, a member of the well-known Wellington family of that name. Recently Mr and Mrs Beaumont and their two daughters have resided at Otaliulm, where Mrs Beaumont passed away after a painful illness.

A wide circle of friends here and in the North Island will extend their sympathy to Mr Beaumont and his daughters in their bereavement. SIR DAVID CAMPBELL (British Official Wirelessj RUGBY, 12th March. General Sir David Campbell who recently resigned the Governorshpi of Malta on account of ill-health, died in London to-day, aged 67.
