OBITUARY

MR WILLIAM HENRY HAYMAN

The death of Mr William Henry Hayman which occurred at his home in Cambria street removes another of New Zealand’s earliest settlers. The late Mr Hayman was bom at Lyttelton in 1852, his parents having come from England in one of the first few ships to found the Canterbury settlement. When be was ten years of age his parents removed to Kaiapoi where he was educated and brought up to country life in the district. He commenced business on bis own account in 1871 and continued until som'e 25 years ago when lie and liis family removed to Nelson. In Kaiapoi lie was secretary and one of the foundation members of the Court Woodford .Lodge (Forresters). He also held a seat on the Kaiapoi Borough Council and served in the Kaiapoi rifles and was a prominent member in the early days of the Kaiapoi Volunteer Fire Brigade. In Nelson for many years he was in the employ of R. Snodgrass and Sons, retiring some ten years ago and devoting his time largely to tbs hobby of gardening where liis garden in Cambria street was a centre, of af traction to many friends. The late Mr Havman who was twice married leaves a widow and six daughters and three sons. The daughters are Mrs A. Blakeley (Kaiapoi), Mrs R. Wright fFendnlton), Mrs J. Ward (Ohoka). Mrs W. Fehsenfeld (Addington), Mrs F. Edwards '(Rotherham), Mrs K. Collins (Karori). The sone are Messrs A. Hayman (Taibnrc), R. Hayman !Nelson), and Rudolph Hayman (Nelson). MR HANSFORD JOHNSTON The death of Mr Hansford Johnston, of Western Hutt Road, Belmont (well known in the firm of E. Johnston and Co.), is announced. Bom at Auckland, the late Mr Johnston . was educated at Nelson College, and came of an old pioneer family well known in Gisborne, Nelson, and Invercargill. His father, Mr David Johnston, was Collector of Customs at Gisborne, Invercargill, and, up to the time of his retirement, at ■'Wellington. His grandfather was Collector of Customs at Nelson. The late Mr Johnston is survived by his widow.
