ARMED POSSE OF POLICE SHOOTING AFFAIR IN WAIRARAEA (By Telegraph—Press Association) MASTERTQN, 12tli March. An armed posge of. nearly a score pf detectiyes. and constables carried oujt an intensive mail hunt throughout tor day for Stanley Charles Maisey, a married man, about 2G years of age, whq fired a revolver at his father-iri-law, Anthony Con well, farmer, of Dalefield, wounding him in the face. Maisey, who is well known in the district, where he lived for a number of years, was released from a menta,l hospital last June. He is separated fijpm his wife and has been working in the Tauranga district. At an early hour this morning lie turned up at his fatlier-in-law’s farm, where his wife and small child are living. He met Conwell at the cow bail and asked if lie could see his wife- tYlien Conwell turned to go to the house to tell his wife and' Mrs Maisey, Maisey suddenly fired a shot at him with a revolver. He missed and Conwell continued on his way to the house, hut ju,st before he reached the back door Maisey fired several more shots, one .of which struck 1 Conwell in the side of the face. Tlie injured man staggered . hut managed to get inside fhe honsg, the doors'of which were locked. Mrs Maisey went to the telephone and was ringing the Carterton police when Maisey saw her through a window. He then fired more shots or broke the window with a stone. He called out to his wife asking her. not to tell the police or doctor anything about the affray, and saying he” "would clear out for good. He then disappeared. Maisey was seen in Carterton about 8 a.m. and again on the'main Carter-ton-Wellington road. A police party in charge' of Sergeant T. H. Dyer, of Masterton, and Detective-Sergeant L. Revell, of Wellington, carried put a wide hut unsuccessful search for the wanted man during the afternoon. Late in the day it was learned’ that a man closely resembling the description of Maisey had boarded service car going to Wellington "abbut. .11 o’clock in the morning. This man was said to have left the. car in Featherston street, Wellington. Maisey’s overcoat was found in a plantation near where he is supposed to have stopped the service car. STILL NO TRACE CARTERTON, This Day. Although the police have been engaged in making inquiries and keeping, a sharp look-out in the district,' ho trace lias yet been found of Stanley Charles Maisey, who is alleged to have shot at and wounded his father-in-law, Anthony Conwell, at' the latter’s farm, North Dalefield. Conwell is progressing satisfactorily.
