LIVE STOCK MARKET
PRICES REMAIN FIRM AT BLENHEIM In keeping with the standard set during recent sales, there was agaiii an outsize entry at this week’s sale at the Blenheim yards, when the 9057 sheep entered occupied almost every available space at the yards (reports the “Express”). There was a good attendance of buyers present, and taken all round the quality of the stock penned was more than satisfactory. The sale developed into a very spirited one, with prices firm on last week, and keen competition prevailing. Altogether 550 fats were penned which is a slightly smaller entry than last week. However, the quality was there, and all the lots were snapped up in the face of keen inquiry. As was the case at the previous auction, ewes met with a particularly ready demand at prices slightly in advance of those of the week before, and the 350 odd offered attracted a lot of attention from local butchers. Three lots of heavy ewes, numbering in all 18 really high class sheep, fetched the best prices, the bidding reaching 17s 9d and 17s 3d, while good prime sorts made round about 16s 9d and 17s. Medium quality sheep made 12s. A week ago 16s, 15s lid, and 15s 5d were the highest prices ruling. Wethers were in short supply, but there was not very much demand for this type of sheep and the 200 offered did not elicit any keen inquiry. Several heavy sheep which were sold individually or in small lots made 235, 22s 3d and 225, while the best lines fetched 22s 7d and 20s 9d. A couple of high class lots were passed in at 25s 9d and 255:. At the previous sale 18s 9d and I9s were the best prices ruling. A total of 4G lambs was entered, and a pair of heavy sorts offered on behalf of Miss Gee, Old Road, fetched 26s Bd. Oother lots brought 22s Id, 20s lOd and 20s 4d. Lighter prime sorts made 18s 3d and 19s Bd. At the previous week’s auction the. best prices ranged from 24s 3d down to 22s and 21s' od.
Some big lots were included in the store yarding of which young ewes and forward lambs formed the big majority. Good conditioned soundmouth ewes met'with a ready sale at prices ranging from 18s up to 25s 9d, which was paid for a line of 148 attractive crossbreds. Other big lines numbering over 100 fetched 18s 6d, 19s, 19s 3d and 245. A pen containing 109 Romney ewes made 19s 3d. Good 4-tooths made 20s 6d and 21s sd, 2, 4 and 6-tootlis 20s Id, and 2tooths 17s 6d and 20,s 9d. The lambs were usually of good quality and condition, and there were several drafts containing over two or three hundred which were disposed of without difficulty. Wethers numbering 800 odd and contained a good sprinkling of young and aged sheep which were of average quality and for which highly satisfactory prices were paid.
