CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL
FIRST NON=LABOUR MAYOR SINCE 1925 STRENGTH OF PARTIES THE SAME (By Telegraph—Preiw Association) CHRISTCHURCH, 11th March. For the first time since 1926 the city of Christchurch has not a Labour Mayor. By an election held to-day to fill the vauancy in the Mayoralty caused by the retirement of the Hon. D. G. Sullivan on his elevation to the Ministry, and for vacancies in the City Council caused by the retirement of three city councillors, one owing to ill-health and two in order to contest the Mayoralty, the balance of power in the City Council is now overwhelmingly in favour of the Citizens' Association group. The result of the election does not alter the strength of parties. A Labour Mayor, one Labour councillor, and two Citizens’ Association councillors retired. A Citizens’ Association Mayor lias been elected and one Citizens’ Association and two Labour councillors were elected. The result of the polling is as follows: MAYORALTY J. W. Beauland (Citizens’ Association) 15,083 (Elected) J. K. Archer (Labour) 14,172 E. L. Hills (Independent Lab.) 499 Majority for Beanland 911 CITY COUNCIL Sir Hugh Acland (C.A.) ......... 15,590 R. M.
