‘‘HEATHEN TYRANNY” OF MOURN= ING CLOTHES
The Rev. T. B. Scrutton, Vicar of Kingston (Surrey), maintains that neither the Christian religion nor respect foi the dead demands the expenditure of money j on a new outfit of black clothes because a relative has died. “There is,” he says, i “no more a reason for us to show respect to a person after death than before. If people will not credit us. with right; feelings unless we wear black, we may ignore their opinion. The: .custom of, wearing black for ‘mourning’ has no other origin than primitive and superstitious ideas.. It bears hardly op poor, people. Anyone .who ignores it does a ical service: anyone who insists on oth-. ers conforming to it, imposes a hcathern tyranny, and is untrue to Christ.”. . j
