CORONERS’ POWERS
CURTAILMENT URGED (United Preßß Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, Oth February. Drastic curtailment of coroners’ powers, especially with a view to preventing inquests becoming trials, is urged by a departmental committee. It recommends, in addition to the abolition of verdicts of felo-de-se and suicide while of unsound mind and the substitution of “died by his own hand.” the withdrawal of coroners’ powers to commit a person for trial for murder, manslaughter or infanticide, and the prohibition of newspaper reports of suicide cases except the name, address and verdict. The committee condemns coroners frequent comments about persons unable to defend themselves. The coronership should be confined to bariissters and solicitors.
