DARING ROBBERY
SAFE BLOWN OPEN OVER £IOO TAKEN (By Telegraph—Press Association! "WELLINGTON, 7tli February A particularly daring and skilful robbery was carried out last night at the Miramar office of the Wellington Gas Company. The office safe was blown open, apparently by gelignite, and a large sum of money was stolen. Mr J. Hunger!ord, the engineer in charge, stated that cash to the value of more than £IOO had been taken from the safe. Tlie exact amount was not yet known. The theft had been discovered at 7.40 this morning, when the foreman in the ordinary course of his duties entered the office to open the premises for the day’s work. The first tiling lie noticed was that the small cash till in the counter had been pulled out and money extracted. Access had apparently been gained by forcing a window leading into the office, where the safe was. Mr Huiigerr'ovd stated that the robbery had been a very skilful one. The lock on the safe was badly battered but the door was not blown off, just enough ."el ignite having been used to open the safe. The back of the door received considerable damage.
