SWIMMING

NELSON TEAM AT BLENHEIM VISITORS CARRY OI'F MOST OP HONOURS There was an attendance of 200 at the Blenheim baths on Saturday evening when a team of Nelson swimmers took part in a carnival arranged by the Blenheim Women’s Swimming Club. Unfortunately part of the programme had to be abandoned owing to the commencement of heavy rain. The standard set by the competitors throughout the evening was a high one, and the finishes of the races were unusually close. Large entries were received for practically every event, and a party of fourteen Nelson enthusiasts lent added interest. The visitors were well rewarded for their support, carrying off most of the honours in spite of determined opposition. RESULTS The detailed results of the events were as tollows: Boys’ 25 yards junior handicap.— First heat: N. Davy, Nelson (scr) 1, G. Julian (lsec) 2, B. McArtney (lsec) 3. Time, 16 2-5. Second heat: G. Thorp, Nelson (set) 1, B. MacDonald (scr) 2, D. Gill (lsec) 3. Time, 13 4-ssee. Third heat: J. Dickson, Nelson (scr) 1, J. Vocasivich (scr) 2, T. Thomas (Gsec) 3. Time, 13 4-ssee. Final: J. Dickson 1, G. Thorp 2, N. Davy 3. With the first two place-fillers in each heat competing, the final tussle was an exciting one. The visitors proved too formidable, notching every place in spite' of -the efforts of tne local boys. Time, 13 2-ssec. Girls’”2s yards junior handicap: E. Ncsbit, Nelson (scr) 1, V. McGrath (lsec) 2, FI. Wilkins (3sec) 3. Attracting one of the largest fields of the evening this contest provided a keen race, and the field was well bunched at the finish Time, 15sec. Bovs’ 50 yards intermediate handicap : J. Frank, Nelson (scr) 1, D. Kerr, Nelson (scr) 2, N. Gallagher (lsec) 3. The Nelson competitors won their third race in succession by a good three feet. Men’s 25 yards: IV. McClymont 1, 0. Hansen, Nelson 2, K. Herbert 3. Also started : P. Islierwood. McClymont had the honour of making the first break in Nelson’s long string of successes, lie secured a short lead soon after the start and held it well, hotly pursued by the others. Women’s 5.0 yards handicap: Miss J. Francis, Nelson (scr) 1, Miss J. Dickson Nelson (scih and Miss E. Nosbit, Nelson (scr) dead heat 2. Also started . B. MacDonald (2sec), B. Cornish (scr), L Potton and J. Nesbit, Nelson. Another keen finish, Miss Francis moving out over the last few yards to gain the verdict by a touch. The race quickly developed into a private duel between Islierwood and Hansen, who clung togcLher during the first three laps, setting a pace that soon left the other two yards behind. The last yards, however, saw Hansen unpacking a sudden burst of speed that caught Isherwood napping, and bo went away to take a narrow decision. The others were well back. Time, lmiii 3 3-ssec.
