EXPEDITION DISBANDED
ENTANGLED IN POLITICS TROUBLE IN THE EAST (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) WASHINGTON, 30th January. A routine announcement by the Department of Agriculture revealed today that Mr Nicholas Roerich, the ni-teriiationally-known American artist and explorer, hue! become entangled in the turbulent politics in China and Manchukuo. The department indicated that it had disbanded the Asiatic plant-hunting expeditions headed bv Mr Roerich ami terminated the governmental services of Mr Roerch himself. Officials disclosed that informal protests against the expedition had been received from high authorities in the area in which it had been working. The case was almost unprecedented in the history of the department, though hundreds of similar exploring groups have been sent lo virtually every country in the world. Mr Roerich’s special assignment on the Chinese expedition was lo find a drought-resistant grass and cereal seeds.
