THE MEDITERRANEAN FLEET
ITALIAN PROTEST TO BRITAIN FOREIGN OFFICE TO REPLY (Received 30th January, 10.50 a.m.) LONDON, 29th January. With the exception of both sides’ conflicting claims of victory on both fronts, the war and its repercussions receded in the background during the last tell days, but newspapers this morning contain reminders that the lamentable business is far from done with. Britain’s reply to the Italian protest against the Mediterranean Fleet dispositions as being an unwarranted disregard of the League liberties, will be one of the first tasks of the Foreign Office. It is wondered whether other Governments concerned will remind reproachful Italy that her entire disregard of the League responsibilities, commencing with aggression without even declaring war, scarcely fits her for a lecturing role. OIL SANCTIONS The official spokesman at Rome, alluding to a London newspaper assertion that Italy will accept an oil embargo as she did financial and economic sanctions, said : “Foreign Governments should have no illusions on that matter. We will react to oil sanctions with such measures as we think opportune.”
