VETERINARY SCIENCE
; GOVERNMENT TO PROVIDE FIVE : new scholarships; ! £IOO AND RETURN FARE f ANNUALLY TO SYDNEY fß.v Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. Five new scholarships in veterinary science this year and four more—one yearly—within five years have been ; provided by the New Zealand Government. Each bursary will be of the | value of £IOO a year, plus a return steamer fare annually to Sydney for those students who may seek instruction at Sydney University Veterinary College. This information was given yesterday by the Minister, of Agriculture, Hon. W. Lee Martin, who explained that Cabinet had approved the proposal to establish arrangements under which assistance can be given to young New Zealand men to obtain qualification in veterinary science. Details of the project were announced later hv the Director-General of Agriculture, Dr C. J. Reakes, who mentioned that in the case of students deciding to go to one of the schools in the United Kingdom, the £IOO scholarship would hold, but no return steamer passage would be provided. It was pointed out that the present veterinary course at Sydney University is one of four years, but that after 1930 it would he extended to five years. The course in the veterinary colleges of the United Kingdom is already five years. It therefore should be noted that, students entering at Sydney now will have a course of one year less than those entering after this year. As the course at Sydney will commence in March there admittedly is very little time available for intending students to put in their applications, but advertisements inviting applications will he published as soon as possible. It should also he noted by intending students that under existing arrangements the production of certificates to the effect that they have passed certain approved examinations by the New Zealand University will be considered by the governing body of the Sydney Veterinary College, which can remit the subjects from the first year’s course.
Five scholarships will he made available this year. There will be nine altogether over a period. Students who are granted these scholarships will be required to enter into an agreement with the No\y Zealand Government that they wil] undertake after qualifying to work in the Dominion for a period of live years either in the service of the Department of Agriculture or otherwise in the same capacity as required by the department.
