RAILWAY CROSSING ACCIDENT
MOTOR LORRY AND NORTH EXPRESS MAN KILLED; TWO CHILDREN INJURED (By Telegraph—Press Association) GORE, This Day. As the result of a collision at the Pukerau railway crossing between a motor lorry and the north express at 8.30 tiiis morning one is dead and two are injured. Percy Millar, Pukerau, farm hand, aged 26 years, married, is dead, and the injured are May Hoffman, 12 years of age. daughter of Mr and Mrs John Hoffman, East Gore, both legs broken; and Lewis Hoffman, aged 7 years, son of John Hoffman, head injuries, not serious. Marylyn Millar, daughter of the deceased. aged 2 years, had a miraculous escape. Millar, who was employed by Stanley Edwards, farmer, Pukerau, was driving the lorry with cream to the Pukerau dairy factory. lie was accompanied by his daughter Marylyn, and Lewis and May Hoffman, nephew and niece. Visibility at the crossing was bad. Millar apparently failed to see the express which docs not slop at Pukerau. There was a terrific impact and the lorry was smashed to bits. The occupants were thrown into the cattlestops. Passers-by assisted to extricate them and medical aid was summoned. Millar was seriously injured and died on the way to hospital. May Hoffman suffered serious leg injuries and was admitted to hospital. Lewis IToffmau with cuts to the head was admitted to hospital. Marylyn Millar escaped miraculously. The deceased is a well .known resident of Pukerau and a member of the Pukerau Football and Cricket Clubs.
The north express was delayed 25 minutes. No damage was done to it.
