SIEVERS BATS BRILLIANTLY

(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 28th January, 9.45 a.m.) JOHANNESBURG, 27th January. The weather was fine and warm and the wicket perfect for the resumption of the cricket match between Australia and Transvaal. Darling was the victim of a great catch at deep square leg. He bit nine fours. Chipperfield hit two fours in succession, but was then bowled by a beautiful ball turning from the off. Another pensation was when; Fingleton was bowled, the 'first ball of Gaydon’s next over keeping low and shooting in sharply. Fingleton displayed delightful forcing tactics and hit 11 fours. At lunch Australia had lost six wickets for 294. Sievers, batting brilliantly, rail up 72 in 90 minutes with 11 fours. The Australian innings occupied 275 minutes. Transvaal began tlie second innings after tea and after a good opening partnership by Coen and Rowan and a stand by the tailenders Langton and Nupen, were all out shortly after 6, the captains agreeing to finish the match today. Langton hit O’Reilly over the roof of the members’ stand and later hit, two successive sixers off Grimmett. AUSTRALIA First Innings

TEAM DISMISSED FOR 66 NEW PLYMOUTH, 27th January. Taranaki, with a good performance in the field, dismissed the M.C.C. eleven in the first innings to-day for 221 runs. The Taranaki batsmen, however, failed miserably, and were all out for 66. M.C.C. did not force a follow-on, and batted again, reaching 14 without loss at stumps. The conditions were excellent when M.C.C. opened/and they gave a bright display of batting, although the attack of Christensen, Pritchard, and Dormer was always dangerous. M.C.C. went for runs, and the score was 96. before Sims and Smith were separated, but then wickets fell steadily, only Mitcliell-Innes (54) and Human (30) reaching double figures. Powell was dismissed by a magnificent one-handed catcli by Pritchard,, who threw himself at full length. Only nervousness and inexperience could account for the weak batting of Taranaki. Certainly the attack was powerful, hut Christensen, the only man to play naturally, showed that'runs could he made. ' Baxter skittled the early batsmen, his average being four for 14, and Sims dismissed the remainder with an average of five for 19. Scores:—
