BRITISH TOTAL INCREASES WORLD FIGURES FOR QUARTER (United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 15th January, 11.50 a.m.) LONDON, 14th January. Ail improvement in shipbuilding is shown in Lloyd’s returns for the quarter ended 31st December. The total of £154,315,359 excluding Russia, from which no figures are available, is the highest for any quarter since June 1931. Of this total 48.2 per cent, is being built in Britain and Ireland. The British total of 743,086 tons, registers an increase of 212,532 tons for the quarter compared with the previous Sejptember and is the highest for five years. It exceeds the aggregate under construction in seven leading countries abroad, among which Germany heads the list with 254,121 tons followed by Japan with 118,610 tons. A total of 311,000 tons has been begun in Britain in the last three months. Steam and motor oil-tankers being constructed total 438,560 tons; Britain again heading the list in number and tonnage. Half the tonnage being constructed in Britain at 31st December related 'to motor ships.
