HITLER AT HOME

PICTURE OF SIMPLE. COUNTRY GENTLEMAN, SYDNEY, Bth January. Nazis in Germany are being urged to buy for Christmas a book just published, “Hitler in his Mountain Home” (says the London correspondent of the “Herald”). The book, which contains 86 photographs of Herr Hitler in semiprivate life at his Bavarian-retreat, gives a picture of him as a simple country gentleman. Haus Wachenfeld, at Obersalzberg Berchtesgaden, near the Austrian frontier, is a typical wooden Bavarian chalet, furnished in simple, comfortable taste. It is surrounded by barbed wire, and the gate has on it a notice stating “Entrance forbidden j fierce dog.” Several pictures show Herr Hitler alone, contemplating the majestic mountains and solitary lakes. Many others show him surrounded by laughing, cheering youth, signing autographs, shaking eager hands. Crowds, mostly women, pay a pilgrimage to Haus Wachenfeld and wait until the Leader takes his afternoon walk, Herr Hitler is also revealed as a dog lover, with his Alsatian Blonda. He takes meals with simple local people and visits his neighbour, General Goering, whose Bavarian estate is almost next door. Hitler is shown signing documents, reading the local newspaper, and striding in plus fours through the snow.
