RIVER BOARD MONTHLY MEETING (From Our Own Correspondent) The monthly meeting of the Motueka River Board, iicld in tlie Council Chambers on Thursday evening, was attended bv Messrs A. E." E'ry (chairman), A. I). Taylor. E. C. Fry and 11. Trewavas. Ail apology for absence was tendered on behalf of Mr B. T. Rowling. In a lettei forwarded to -Mr K. J. Holyoake M.P., the Minister of Public Works advised in regard to correspondence received by the former from the Motueka River ’Board, asking if the Government would be prepared to give a greater subsidy than £1 for £1 on the estimated cost of the survey and report for the control of the Motueka River that he could not see his way to grant more than £1 for £1 on the' total estimated cost of £225 The Minister pointed out that it was quite unusual to grant even a subsidy ol this amount towards a river survey and he felt that the Government had gone as iar as it could in this matter. Mr K- J. Holyoake M.P., acknowledged receipt of the Board s letter with further reference to the question of a subsidy on the cost of providing a survey of the Motueka River District. Me noted that the Board now asked for a subsidy of £2 for £1 in lieu of a £1 for £1 subsidy and stated that representations would be made to the Hon. the Minister of Public Works as he considered the Board should not be asked to incur any greater expense than at first provided for. Mr Holyoake advised that the Board would be notified immediately he had any information. The chairman intimated that Mr Holyoake was arranging for a deputation to meet the Hon. K. Semple on Saturday in regard to the question of subsidy. Mr E. C. Fry reported on the encroachment of the Brooklyn Creek. It was decided, on the motion of the chairman and Mr A. D. Taylor, that the matter of this encroachment opposite Mr K. J. Holvoake’s property in Old Mill Road, be left in the hands of the works’ committee with power to act. The chairman suggested that the clearing of the growths in the western end of Whakarewa street be also left to the works committee. After a brief discussion it was agreed on the motion of Messrs E. G'. Fry and Trewavas that the whole Board inspect the Motueka River at the western end of Whakarewa street oil Saturday mornAccounts amounting to £9 10s 6d were passed for payment.

CRICKET ASSOCIATION At a meeting of the Motueka Cricket Association, held in the High School, there were present Messrs H. Smith (chairman), A. E. Lindup, J. Brash, G. "Webster and G. Fowler. . ( Mr Lindup reported that an Umpires Association had been formed and that rules had been adopted. The Association, he said, had asked for full recognition by the Cricket Association and had also asked for the latter to be represented on the Umpires’ Association. It was decided, on the motion of Messrs Smith and Fowler, that the Umpires’ Association be informed that provision existed for that Association to be represented on the management committee of the Cricket Association. It was also decided (Messrs Brash and Smith) that Mr G. Fowler be the Cricket Association’s representative on the Umpires’ Association. The resolution, carried at a previous Meeting, that all competition fixtures be played on specified dates irrespective of representative matches —was rescindei’lt was agreed.
