RUNNING SHOES
| FOR BOARD MEMBERS I -MINISTER’S THREAT j [By Telegraph—Press Association! CHRISTCHURCH, 9th January. ; Remarks illustrating the attitude of (lie Labour Cabinet to boards associated with certain Government departments were made by (lie Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Public Works, during his address to (lie men at Ashley River Camp to-day. Mr Semple referred more especially to his attitude as Minister for Transport toward the Transport Board. In a later conversation with a reporter he gave his remarks a more general application, inferring that at present no particular board was singled out for criticism. When lie had taken office as Minister for Transport, said Mr Semple in his address, lie had found, in common with other Ministers, that the powers of tlie department had been delegated to a board. “1 have given notice to these gentlemen that they can obstruct no longer,” lie said, “and that instead of big salaries we will present them with running shoes.”
His subsequent statement was that certain of tlie boards—tlie Highways Board, for example—were probably capable of reorganisation and so were likely to remain. Others which might obstruct- the Government in its efforts to rehabilitate tlie country would have their salaries discontinued and would be given “running shoes.”
