FATALITY AT RAROTONGA

DROWNED WHILE BATHING . (By Telegraph—Press Association) RAROTONGA, 7th January. A fatality occurred at Rarotonga yesterday involving the death of Charles Owens liodgins, dentist, while bathing olf Avarua wharf. A heavy sea was running at the time and there was a considerable undertow. The hurricane last February somewhat altered the contour of the coast in the vicinity of the harbour, with the result that iu heavy seas there is a very pronounced tide rip and a strong current out to sea. An inquest lias not yet been held, but the theory is that the victim was overcome b- the strength of the seas and collapsed through heart failure. Efforts were made to resuscitate Mr liodgins, but without avail. The funeral, took place this morning and was largely attended by all sections of the community, both European and Maori, as a mark of esteem. Mr liodgins leaves a wife and young family.
