ADVENTURE IN INDUSTRY

OF NATIONAL IMPORTANCE Addressing the Old Mancunians' Association in’ Manchester Mr Frederick Marquis said be was anxious that the youth of the country should be stirred lo some recognition that there was adventure still in industry and that the utility of commerce was of as great a, national importance as that of any of ihe professions. A fair proportion at any rate of the great talent that, generation by generation, was tutored in such schools as the Manchester Grammar School, should be directed into the field of industry and encouraged to appreciate both its national importance and the fun there was in the pursuit of adventure in commerce. A great new life was opening up for youth. We were going not back but

forward —forward lo a belter sort of life than was lived by those wlio were at school forty years ago. As the world changed -it opened up new opportunities. W hen he looked at the artistic productions —art applied to the common utensils of life—coming into this country from Sweden and Czecho-Slovakia lie asked himself whether we were sufficiently alive to the importance of applying that form of culture represented 'by artistic expression to the common things that were going into the homes of the people. Where was England to stand in the matter? Was it not high time that, recognising that a new world was coming, those responsible for education should direct tiieir attention to such matters, wliicli were of great sociological importance?
