BALL AT ANAKIWA
(Contributed) On New Year’s Eve a delightful fancy dress ball was enjoyed by the friends and guests of Mr and Mrs Hazelwood, of Anakiwa Homestead, Queen Charlotte Sound. At twilight the company assembled on the lawn by the calm waters of the picturesque Sound. There was not a dull moment from the time Miss Wilson’s orchestra struck the first note of the Grand March, till the new day was well advanced. Accompanied by her husband, Mrs Beauchamp Hazelwood, attired in a becoming gown of black georgette, made a charming hostess. At midnight all joined hands and sang “Auld Lang Syne,” and three cheers were given for Mr G. M. Spence, of Blenheim, who made a very efficient M.C. The Monte Carlo was won by Miss Jean Irving and Mr L. Coster, and the Statue Dance by Miss B. Wills and Mr Alan Butcher.
Amongst the most original costumes were ‘‘The Three Blind Mice,” Mesdames Raine and MacDougall and Miss R. Cuff; ‘‘Peter the Puss,” Miss H. Tustin ; “Pirate,” Miss Jean Irving) “Pop Eye, the Sailor,” Miss K. Sims ; “Scarecrow,” J. Raine; “Courtier,” Master David, Bush. Others present included : Mesdames C. Cuff, Grecian Lady; G. W.
