THE FORTNIGHTLY MEETING I CORRESPONDENCE AND REPORTS The fortnightly meeting of the Nelson City Council held lust evening was attended by the Mayor (Mr G. L. Page), Councillors E. R. Neale, J. FitzGerald, J. Glasgow, L. C. Pettit, S. A. Gibbs, 11. G. B. Hurst, S. H. Moynagh, S. McArthur, and G. P. Russell. PAYMENTS The following payments were authorised from the various accounts:— £ s. d.
Referring to the large payment from the General Account the Mayor explained that it was partly due to the payment of the Christmas bonus to the unemployed, which, with the usual week’s wages, amounted to £llOO. A refund for that amount would be received from the Unemployment Board. •' CORRESPONDENCE ‘ The Nelson Institute committee was granted the remission of rates for the ' current year. 1 The Nelson Provincial Scottish Society forwarded a list of public performances during the past year, and thanked the Council for reconsideration of the matter of subsidy. Oil the motion of Councillor Moynagh it was decided to deal with the letter at the next ..meeting, as he considered it was a matter which required investigation. The Director-General of Health asked that the Sanitary Inspector be granted permission to attend a conference of inspectors at Christchurch, commencing on the 28th January. It was decided to grant the Inspector leave to attend the conference. Application was made for a road leading off Maori road to be graded and gravelled, that a protection rrpl be erected and that rubbish be cleared . from a. waste portion of land. It was decided that the Works Committee inspect the w6rk referred to. An extension of the sew er to his house in Endeavour street was granted to Mr R. J. Roper. A letter was received on behalf of the estate of the late Mr W. Bennett for the Council to bear the ex-pense of a drain, was necessary on account of • the position of a manhole. The Works . Committee is to visit. The Nelson Fire Board .wrote sug- . getting, that the Council resume posses- - sion f of hose reel stations at the Port and Public’ Hospital, and adjust the - account between the Board and the ’ Council accordingly. ' ; • It was decided to take possession of the two reel stations, the Engineer stating that they could be made good use of in the erection of shelter sheds at Pioneer Park. . Requests were received from Messrs Griffin and Sons and y .the Nelson Club ’ to be granted the reduced rate forgelectricity which was recently adopted by the Council for users of over 300 units of electric power per month. The matter was referred to the Electric Light Committee with power to act. • A letter was received from the Con- ' servator of Forests as to the Waterworks ''Reserve being separated from the Maungatapu Forest Fire District and suggesting the appointment of an honorary ranger. The Waterworks Committee is to confer with the Conservator of Forests on the matter. An application by the Nelson Amateur Athletic Association for use of Trafalgar Park on the 18th or 25th
January was referred to the Reserves Committee. REPORTS , RESERVES COMMITTEE At a meeting of the Reserves’ Committee held on Thursday, 12th December, there were present: Councillor Neale (chairman), The Mayor, Councillors Moynagh, Russell, and Hurst. The committee has to report:—As to the letter from the Amateur Athletic and Cycling .Club offering £lO towards the cost of repairing the cycle track qt Trafalgar Park: That the City Engineer has been instructed to repair the inner half of the asphalt track at an estimated cost of £4O. The report was adopted. STOKE AERODROME CON= TRIBUTION A meeting of a special committee appointed to consider the making of a contribution to the Nelson Aero Club was held on Thursday, the 12th December, when there were present: The Mayor (chairman). Councillors Moynagh, McArthur and Gibbs. The committee reported:— (1) That it has interviewed officials of the Aero Club and enquired into the conditions upon which the Harbour Board proposes to take over the aerodrome. (2) That it recommends that the Council contribute the sum of £125, being one-fourth of the cost of the work which the Aero Club is carrying out on the aerodrome before it is handed over to the Harbour Board. The report was adopted. WORKS COMMITTEE A meeting of the Works Committee
was held on Monday, the 16th December. There were present: Councillors Russell (chairman), The Mayor, Councillors Fitz-Gerald, Pettit and McArthur. The committee reported and recommended: As to the''tenders received for the erection of dressing sheds at Pioneers’ Park: That no tender be accepted; that the work be carried out by the Council’s staff, and that the matter of the lining of the men’s shed be deferred. The report was adopted.CITY ENGINEER . The City Engineer (Mr J. G. Littlejohn) reported for fortnight ending 19th December as follows: Streets and Footways: Work has chiefly been concentrated on sealing the within the 40 chain radius. £)ne mile, eight chains have been completed
since the last report, thus practically completing this work. This brings the total length of sealed surfaces in the city to 20 miles 14 chains, leaving about 16 miles 66 chains of formed streets without permanent surfacing. Topdressing work on the streets and footpaths has also been carried out. General cleaning up of the streets is in progress. Drainage: There have been no interruptions m tlie drainage system during the last fortnight. Water: Surveys have been proceeded with of the pipeline for proposed supply from the Maitai. The big dam continues to overflow as a result of the pumping from ITanby Park. Wc are now working two shifts'covering from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Gas: Two short extensions of the mains have been made where necessary to give supply to new dwellings. Hie contract for the renovation of the small holder has been satisfactorily completed. Building Returns: Permits for November are as follows: Dwellings, new, 5 (£4078); alterations, etc., 4 (£235); business premises, alterations, etc., 7 (£4609); other buildings, alterations, etc., 3 (£45); total, 19 (£8967). Demolitions, ,pne. Relief of Unemployment: The following men have been employed during the present week under the various schemes : No. 5 scheme, 263; Poppy Day fund, 34; total, 297. The report was adopted. ELECTRICAL ENGINEER The Electrical Engineer (Mr E. Fleming) reported for the fortnight ended 19th December as follows: — _ City applications 3043 (increase 6); city extensions 5149 (increase 27); total 8192 (increase 33). Lighting load applied for 1807 k.w. (increase 2 k.w.); heating 4591 k.w. (increase 19 k.w.); power 2141 k.w. (in-
crease 1 k.w.); total 8539 k.w. (increase 22 k.w.). City peak load day 460 k.w., night 670 k.w. Tahuria, Stoke and Wakatu, dav 26 k.w.,flight 42.5 k.w. The National Electric Company’s tender for 400 meters at £390 was accepted. The report was adopted. . GENERAL BUSINESS Councillor Russell drew attention to the state of the footpaths in Nile street East and from Collingwood street to the baths. The matter was referred to the Works Committee.
