AUCKLAND POINT SCHOOL

PARENTS’ DAY AND PRIZE-GIVING

THE ANNUAL CEREMONY OPENED BY MR 11. ATMORE, M.P. The annual prize-giving ceremony and Parents’ Day at the Auckland Point School Look place yesterday. The weather was showery, hut rain hold of! Jong enough lor the prize-giving to Lake place out-of-doors. Mr 11, A lino re, M.P., opened the function, and delivered a brief address, presenting the prizes from the steps of the school. Mr Atinore was introduced by Mr L. Bull, chairman of the committee. Mr Atinore stated his pleasure at having the opportunity of meeting the boys and girls once again. He expressed'the hope that next year they would see under way a more advantageous play ground for the school. The Minister of Education was visiting Nelson on 25th January, and the Minister of Public Works on 6th January, and Mr Atmore said he intended to make representations along the lines of the plan which he had promulgated four years ago for a better playground, by having reclaimed the area on the other side of the roacl from the school, connected by an overbridge from the present ground. Tie hoped that bis proposal would be received sympathetically by the Minister. Mr Atmore regretted that the weather was u.npropitious, for there was much lie could have said to the parents concerning the educational year opening next February. There was evidence of much better things ahead for education. Economy was wise spending, not as some folk believed, not spending at all, and more should bo spent on the educational development of the future citizens —to provide the teachers with adequate remuneration and the child with better equipment for a life that was growing more complex with the years. Mr Atmore said that he could get in touch with the Education Board on the question of tlie new ground, and consult the committee and the City Council. He concluded by wishing all a happy holiday, and presented the prizes as follows :
