CHOPPING MATCHES

AT GOLDEN DOWNS SPORTS MEETING Tho annual picnic and sports meeting of the Golden Downs Sports Club was held at Goldeil Downs, the large attendance being provided with a bright day’s sport. The chopping, track and field events, were very keenly contested, whilst tlie novelty and children’s races proved both entertaining and amusing. In the inter-camp competition for the McEnaney Sports Cup, Tongue Spur Camp was successful with 33 points. The exhibition chopping matches (12in upright "arid 14in underhand) between Mr A. Steer, of Tapawera, and Mf L. Ilahn, of Golden Downs, were most exciting, and both axemen were warmly applauded for their splendid performances. The committee responsible for the meeting desire to thank Mr A. Steer and donors of trophies, and the many others who so generously contributed cash donations. The committee also wish to thank the Rev. W. Edgar arid Mr Giblin foi- tlup efficient management of the "children’s sections, the ladies of Golden Downs for their assistance in the afternoon tea arrangements, and all those who worked so hard on sports day to make the fixture such an outstanding success.
