Sir Percy Harris asked Mr Runciman if he had seen the statement iof the chairman of the E. and O. pointing out the serious effects of restrictions oh the shipping trade between Australia and Britain. Tlie president of the Board of Trade, Mr Walter Runciman, in a written reply to a parliamentary question as to whether any discussions were in progress with a view to an Anglo-American trade agreement, said that following their declared policy the Government have under constant review the possibility of negotiating trade agreements with foreign countries, and informal exchanges had accordingly taken place from time to time with a view to ascertaining whether a basis existed for negotiations between the United Kingdom and the United States, but these ex-, changes have been of an exploratory nature.
