TRADE RESTRICTIONS
EFFECT ON FREIGHTS POLICY OF GOVERNMENT (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, 17th December. Questioned about the effect of quotas and other trade restrictions on freight, Mr Walter Riihciman, President, of the Building Trade, in' the House of Commons said amid ironical opposition cheers that the policy of the iGovernment was to provide for the removal of such restrictions. Sir Percy Harris asked Mr Runciman if he had seen the statement iof the chairman of the E. and O. pointing out the serious effects of restrictions oh the shipping trade between Australia and Britain. Mr Runciman: “Yes. I shall pay attention to that and similar recommenda. tions.” AGREEMENTS WITH FOREIGN • COUNTRIES (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, 17th December. Tlie president of the Board of Trade, Mr Walter Runciman, in a written reply to a parliamentary question as to whether any discussions were in progress with a view to an Anglo-American trade agreement, said that following their declared policy the Government have under constant review the possibility of negotiating trade agreements with foreign countries, and informal exchanges had accordingly taken place from time to time with a view to ascertaining whether a basis existed for negotiations between the United Kingdom and the United States, but these ex-, changes have been of an exploratory nature.
