16-YEAR-OLD girl wins new SOUTH WALES TITLE ALSO IN WINNING DOUBLES (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) SYDNEY, 16tli November. Thelma Coyne, aged 16, is the latest addition to the remarkable number of juniors who have forced themselves to the forefront of the tenuis world in Australia. Thelma meritoriously won the New South Wales singles championship from Joan Hartigan and in company with Mrs Hopman defeated Mrs H. Bette and Miss A. G. Menzics in the doubles final. In the singles Thelma displayed sound tactics in concentrating on Miss Hartigan’s backhand while her own powerful backhand shots were placed to pci faction. Hopman gave another line demonstration of tenacity when after losing the first two sets to Quist he took the next two after a great struggle. Quist however regained control in the fifth to win the title. Results:— Men’s singles final: Quist defeated Hopman, 6-3, 6-1, 3-6, 8-10, 6-2. Doubles final: Crawford and McGrath defeated Quist and Thompson, 2-6. 6-1, 6-2, 7-9, 6-3. Women’s singles final: Miss Coyne beat Miss Hartigan, 6-2, 6-4. Women’s doubles final : Mrs Hopman and Miss Coyne defeated Mrs "Bette and Miss Menzies, 8-6, 6-2. Mixed doubles semi-final: Turvey and Miss Joan Hartigan beat Kay and Miss Berryman, 6-4, 5-1. Kay retired. McGRATH TO COMPETE IN NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS WELLINGTON, This Day. V. McGrath, of New South Wales, will be a competitor in the New Zealand championships which will begin at Miramar on 30th December. Efforts are also being made by the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association to get E. F. Moon, the Australian Davis Cup player some seasons ago, to make a visit with McGrath. The management committee is looking into the question of status of players employed by sports goods establishments, and is also inquiring into the conditions of membership necessary for delegates representing any association to be appointed to the New Zealand Council.
