MOTUEKA RIVER BOARD
(To the Editor) Sir, —In reference to my letter re Motueka River Board, published in “The Mail,” I received a note from a resident, who inadvertently omitted his address, asking me: Did the ratepayers have to pay to have the River Board abolished, and did they pay for the cost of the Commission? As there appear to be several residents with similar initials as the writer, I can only reply per courtesy of “The Mail.” (1)-The ratepayers who signed the petition for the abolition of this body paid Is per vote, some paying two or three shillings, according to value of rated property. (2) The legal representative of the petitioners was notified that a commission would be sot up, and they would have to defray cost of same. This handsome proposition was replied to in an emphatic manner. 1 do not know if the River Board footed the bill, but I am certain the petitioners did not contribute. If the writer will send his address, I will reply to his other question, which I consider a personal matter.—l am, etc., M. MEARS. Motueka, 7th November.
