mu ilium To Al] who have not pet Tfoted for UANCE It is recognised that much of the support given 1 6 prohibition in the past has come from men and women actuated by the highest ideals. The professional prohibitionist is, of course, always with us, but admittedly many men and women believed prohibition to be a practical possibility, and voted for it even at the prospect of personal sacrifice. The complete breakdown of prohibition in every one of the countries in which it has been tried, and its consequent repeal, has proved beyond all possible doubt that total abstinence by compulsion is not only impossible of attainment but is productive of many strange and terrible reactions. The failure of prohibition, however, need not discourage those genuinely interested in the advancement of temperance—rather the defeat of prohibition is a victory for temperance. It is significant that those nations which give little or no thought to the prohibition idea have cultivated a strong healthy temperance sentiment, a solid national public opinion—the best regulator of the use of any of nature’s gifts. Once the prohibition fetish is discarded, the way is clear for progress along the path of true temperance. New Zealand, although a small country, holds a proud place among the nations, and an overwhelming vote for Continuance would indicate plainly for ajl the world to see, that New Zealand is sound at heart, sturdily selfreliant and intends to continue to progress in sobriety, under the flag of freedom. “Temperance - means moderation, and when you say that a country has a temperate climate, you mean that it has an enjoyable climate, not that it has no climate at all." -MAX O’RELL. i^iiiEnnmiiiiniiEnimnniinninnßnHiiiiinmiiiiiiniiininmiimmiiininniiiiiiimiimifniiiniiiinnniimimntiiminiimnnnHnmminnniHinniiniininiiimiiiiiinnnmiiiiiniiinnimKinßiHinninnmiTiiiiimnnmmiiiiinnniinnimmtiHTinmiimiTniiiiinintniTnniiinininßiniißiiiißasniias
