REMOVAL OF TAXI STAND
SUGGESTION BEFORE CITY COUNCIL VICTORIA AVENUE: SUGGESTED AS NEW SITE A suggestion was made at last night’s meeting of the Nelson City Council that the taxi stand be moved front Trafalgar street to Victoria Avenue. •Councillor S. A. Gibbs said the taxi stand in the middle of Trafalgar street was in a dangerous position. H had been suggested that the stand could be removed to Victoria Avenue.* He then moved that the Traffic Inspector prepare a sketch plan of Victoria Avenue showing provision for head-on to kerb parking of vehicles, and that the Town Clerk inquire into the cost- and a method of installing a free telephone in Trafalgar street with direct connection with Victoria Avenue, calls not going through the exchange. Councillor L. C. Pettit seconded the motion.
Councillor J. Fitz-Gerald said the question of the removal of the stand was not an easy one. The taxis were in a handy position at present and be considered the removal to another site, would have two results—frequency of ac-' cidents in Trafalgar street, and a diminution in the business done by the taxis. He looked on the taxi rank as the best safety zone that could be had in the centre of the street, and in that a useful purpose was served. He would oppose any change in-the public interest. Councillor Gibbs pointed out that the points mentioned by Councillor FitzGerald could be decided when the actual decision was made whether the cars would remain or be moved. He wished the proposal to be investigated. Councillor S. McArthur considered the taxi cars were a menace to safety where they' were at present. He agreed with the suggstioh that they should be moved. A direct telephone from Trafalgar street would save any inconvenience.. The motion was carried.
