UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES

METHOD OF PUBLICATION ' ALTERATION ‘ANNOUNCED IBy Telegraph—Presß Association] WELLINGTON, This Day., An alteration in the method of publication of unemployment figures for New Zealand was announced at the weekend by the Minister, of Employment. It is contended that under the existing system the value of New Zealand figures fo r purposes of international comparison is diminished and that the new method will accord more closely with the standard in use in other countries. The past piractice of the Board in publishing statistics of unemployed has been to include with registered unemployed all those in full-time employment on works which are aided by financial assistance from the unemployment fund. The Hon. S. G. Smith said that in future the Board would treat as unemployed only those in receipt of rationed relief work or sustenance plus a comparatively small proportion whose registrations were “live” but who for various reasons were not actually receiving relief at the date of the return.

The number of unemployed males registered in New Zealand at 28th September, taken out under the new method, is as under : Registered but not eligible for or not placed on relief, 2500; on part-time, relief under scheme No. 5, 24,183; receiving sustenance without work, 15,517; total unemployed 42,200.
