STRANDED LINER’S PASSENGERS TRANSFERRED TO RESCUE SHIPS (United PresH Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) MIAMI (Florida) ,4th, September. A rising sea and rain halted, the rescue to-night of the passengers aboard the Dixie, which is stranded on a reef. The owner’s agents reported that 164 out of 384 persons on board the Dixie had been saved. MIAMI, sth September. The last of the 143 passengers marooned on the Dixie were transferred to three rescue ships in less than 3 hours this morning, Captain E W. Sundstrom and a skeleton crew remaining aboard. HURRICANE’S TOLL DEATHS MAY REACH 1#!)0 DAMAGE TO CROPS AND STRUCTURES (United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copy right ) MIAMI (Florida), 4th September. ’ The raging tropical hurricane which swept Florida Keys was headed back iii a north-easterly direction across'the state to-night with apparently .diminishing force. Relief officials estimate that the. hurricane in Florida Keys left a death-roll-of from two hundred to five hundred, and may even reach 1000. The exatit figure will probably remain, unknown until communications have been re-estab-lished with many marooned paints. ~. The dwindling hurricane,is proceeding northward through Georgia, still carrying with it some damage to .crops and structures. ■ • ■ Rescue crews are labouring to get food and medical aid to the injured and refugees.. Washed-out bridges have hampered their efforts on the upper-and lower Matecumbe Keys, leaving the fate of the residents doubtful. y-y
