CONSPIRACY TO ROB
BANK AT BALLARAT ACCUSED FOUND GUILTY (United Press Assor iatiou—By Electric Telegraph—Copy right) MELBOURNE, sth September. Henry Stokes, an investor, of Melbourne, was found guilty at Ballarat of a charge of conspiracy to rob the Ballarat branch of the Commonwealth Bank, John Mulligan was similarly charged and acquitted. The manager of the bank said that from £BO,OOO to £IOO,OOO was in the bank at the time. The prosecutor alleges that offers of £SOOO and £IO,OOO were made to two constables if the job was successful if the police stood on the footpath while gear was got into the bank. The police pretended acquiescence. The defence was that accused had nothing to do with the allegation. They said that the police made the proposition to them. Stokes was remanded for sentence.
