DROWNED IN WAIKATO

GIRL JUMPS FROM BRIDGE [By Telegraph—Press Association] CAMBRIDGE, 2nd September. The second drowning fatality in three weeks occurred at Cambridge shortly before noon. A girl aged about 18 was seen to jump from the high level bridge and fall 130 ft into the Waikato River. The tragedy was witnessed by a number of relief workers on the bank, and every effort was made to rescue the girl. Two workers in a canoe found the body caught in a snag. Trying to lift the head above water, they overturned in the swirling current, and with difficulty reached the bank. A relief worker, T. Collins, showed conspicuous courage. The body was finally with the aid of ropes by the police. The victim was a pretty brunette, wearing a green cardigan and skirt and a yellow jumper. Her identity lias not been established.
