REAL CRICKET
JOYOUS MEMORIES (By Air Mail —From Our Own Correspondent) LONDON, Bth August. A famous old sportsman was recalling some cricketing memories of the days before safety-first cast its blight over English cricket. Jessop’s immortal feat agaifist Australia at the Oval, when The Croucher turned imminent defeat into a ten runs’ victory, was not the only reminiscence. At Birmingham once my old friend, seeing on the tape that Jessop had .just gone in to bat, took a hansom to the county ground. As he drove up a mighty shout greeted his ears. Entering the ground, he saw the cause. Jessop in little more than half an hour had just scored his century! My friend also saw Jessop, for the gentlemen against tire players of the South in 1907, knock up 191 in ninety minutes. But his most joyous memory was Notts v. Sussex hi 1911, when Alletson scored 187 out of 277 runs in ninety, minutes, taking an Hour for his first fifty, fifteen minutes for his second, and just under a quarter of an hour for his last 87 runs. After that the pundits tried to teach this natural batsman to perform in the classic manner, and he never got over it.
